Cloud characteristics and channel selection for IASI radiances in meteorologically sensitive areas

چکیده
Introduction Advanced infrared sounders, such as the Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS, launched on board the Aqua satellite in May 2002) and the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) scheduled to be on board the first operational European polar-orbiting satellite Metop, measure or will measure radiation in many thousands of channels. They have the potential to provide atmospheric temperature and composition information at a much higher vertical resolution and accuracy that can be achieved with the previous generation of satellite instruments such as the High resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder. As it is neither feasible nor efficient to assimilate all the channels in a Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) system, channel selection policies have been designed in the NWP context. Previous studies have proposed methods in order to reduce the number of channels to keep only the ones, which bring the most useful information. In particular Rabier et al. (2002) and Fourrié and Thépaut (2003) have used a method based on the information content following Rodgers (1996) for clear sky conditions.

Integrating High Spatial Resolution Imager Observations to improve Cloud-cleared Radiances from Hyperspectral Infrared Sounders
Today, most Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) centers are assimilating cloud-free radiances. Radiances from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder have been directly assimilated in NWP models with modest positive impacts. However, since only 5% percentage of AIRS fields of view (fovs) are cloud-free, only very small amounts of the data in the lower troposphere are assimilated. (Note that channels in...

This paper presents an analysis of the uncertainties in the Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS) products for the infrared channels of Meteosat/SEVIRI using Metop/IASI as a reference. It is based on the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) and aims to provides guidance for users of these GSICS products as well as future evaluations of other products. The in...
متن کاملOn the angular effect of residual clouds and aerosols in clearsky infrared window radiance observations 2. Satellite experimental analyses
[1] This paper continues an investigation into the zenith angular effect of cloud-contamination within “clear-sky” infrared (IR) radiance observations commonly used in the retrieval of environmental data records (EDRs), which include “cloud-cleared radiances” (as is typical from hyper/ultra spectral IR sounders), as well as “cloud-masked” data (as is typical from imagers). The simple probabilit...
متن کاملMatching radiative transfer models and radiosonde data from the EPS/Metop Sodankylä campaign to IASI measurements
Radiances observed from IASI are compared to calculated ones. Calculated radiances are obtained using several radiative transfer models (OSS, LBLRTM v11.3 and v11.6) on best estimates of the atmospheric state vectors. The atmospheric state vectors are derived from cryogenic frost point hygrometer and humidity dry bias corrected RS92 measurements flown on sondes launched 1 h and 5 min before IAS...
متن کاملCloud mask via cumulative discriminant analysis applied to satellite infrared observations: scientific basis and initial evaluation
We introduce a classification method (cumulative discriminant analysis) of the discriminant analysis type to discriminate between cloudy and clear-sky satellite observations in the thermal infrared. The tool is intended for the high-spectral-resolution infrared sounder (IRS) planned for the geostationary METEOSAT (Meteorological Satellite) Third Generation platform and uses IASI (Infrared Atmos...
